Sport Hunting Is Cruel and Unnecessary.
The sound of a gun going off breaks the peaceful quiet of the forest. There is a scramble and then a thud, as the poor dying animal falls to the ground. The murderous hunter hurries over to examine his kill, a glee full smile spreading across his face, proud of his catch. That smile makes me sick. Taking pride in killing another living thing is horrible, and sport hunting is vindictive and pointless.
The main reason is of course the pain associated with this “sport”. The animals that are shot sometimes get away and the bullet wound is exposed causing it to get painfully infected. The hunters sometimes set traps and forget about them. When animals get caught in forgotten traps they die of starvation, or of exposure. Either way is excruciatingly long and painful for the animal. That definitely doesn’t sound like the ideal way to die. Being hunted down and painfully killed so that a hunter can have you head displayed on a mantle. Pointless murder. That is what it is.
The second reason is that well, there is no need for it. We don’t need to hunt to feed ourselves and our families. Sure, we had to do it for survival one hundred thousand years ago, but we have super markets and more efficient ways to ways to get food that don’t involve the slaughter of wild animals. The aboriginal people still use hunting as a source of food, but they only kill what they need and they hunt for survival, not money or “fun”.
Some people argue that sport hunting is needed to control the population of wildlife in the forest. This argument is stupid and over-played. Have you ever heard of the food chain? The primary consumers, the small mammals, fish, insects, deer, elk, and small birds, eat the plants. The secondary consumers, amphibians, weasels, raccoons, larger insects, shrew and birds of prey, eat the primary consumers. The tertiary consumers, large mammals such as wolves and bears eat the secondary consumers and primary consumers. That’s the food chain and it works to control the population just fine. Don’t screw it up by killing off deer and elk. They are a very important part of the eco-system.
There are many accidents that can happen when people hunt. According to the International Hunter Education Association, there were over a dozen deaths and one hundred and thirty four injuries that occurred just in 2001, and that is only including humans. Hunting ‘accidents’ destroy property, and kill or injure horses, cows and even dogs and cats. It’s a constant problem, and one warden said that “hunters seem unfamiliar with their firearm and do not have enough respect for the damage they can do.” He is right. Hunters often do not know how to handle their weapons. They could be joking around, pointing the gun at each other and pretending to shoot, when the trigger gets pulled accidentally.
There is no use for sport hunting, and I think it is cruel and inhumane to treat animals as prey. We do not need them for food and it causes injury. The only thing hunting is good for is causing pain. Besides, how would you like to be shot in the but?
Nice.
